Law Society Updates Guidance on Inclusive Language
The Law Society of England and Wales has issued new guidance encouraging solicitors and firms to use more inclusive language in professional and client communications. The move forms part of the Society’s ongoing work to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the legal profession.
Among the most notable recommendations is retiring the traditional salutation “Dear Sirs” in favour of gender-neutral alternatives such as “Dear Colleagues”, “Dear All”, or a simple “Good morning”. The guidance also urges firms to review website copy, recruitment materials and internal documents to ensure wording reflects modern, inclusive standards.
While the intention behind these changes is positive, some practitioners have expressed concern that an emphasis on language risks overshadowing more substantive equality measures — such as improving access to the profession, progression opportunities and workplace culture. Others have noted that frequent updates to “approved” terminology may create confusion or unnecessary administrative burden for firms already balancing complex compliance demands.
A sensible approach for most practices will be to:
* Review standard correspondence and templates for outdated terms;
* Develop a short, practical in-house style guide on inclusive language;
* Provide light-touch training so that changes are understood and applied consistently.
Ultimately, inclusive language should support professionalism and respect in communication, not distract from them. By taking a proportionate approach, firms can meet the spirit of the Law Society’s guidance while maintaining clarity, efficiency and their own professional voice.
